Event of Advent

Lacan, in his 18th seminar, often plays on the French homophone “événement” and “avènement” which corresponds with the English homophone “event” and “advent.” It is a useful homophone in that it helps us to further reflect upon the quasi-religious dimension of Badiou’s work. However, it is not for this reason that we ought to reject it. Advent contains “ad-” which implies a confusion in that it is something toward which we strive – but this is not at all an event for Badiou. For Badiou an event is something from “ex-,” that is, from without, from the outside. The shift is one from a linear series of succession (the count, n+1) to one of topological torsion.
