Spivak, many years ago, claimed that “tokenism” occurs when “power withheld from the vast majority of women is offered to few, so that it may appear that any truly qualified woman can gain access to leadership, recognition, and reward; hence that justice based on merits actually prevails.”
I think it is time to define post-tokenism. Post-tokenism occurs when the critique of tokenism stands in place of an authentic reformation of the prevailing injustice toward women or other marginalized groups. In other words, post-tokenism occurs when tokenism postures as critique of tokenism.
We see post-tokenism most prevalent within contemporary situational comedy television programs. The token marginal character will come to recognize himself as such and yet nonetheless ironically play the role of the token.
